The King Robert the Bruce Course is renowned for offering golf at its best. The holes there on in were longer and more testing and lacked a little bit of character compared to the holes along the coast. The famous Ailsa Course is the one that has hosted four memorable Open Championships, including the "Duel In the Sun" between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson in 1977, and in 2009 when Stewart Cink outlasted sentimental favorite Tom Watson in a four-hole playoff. Hole 4 is where the magic starts a mid range par 3 with a large mound to the right and wasteland, bunkers, beach and thick rough to the left. I think most people know the Ailsa course pretty well, so I’ll avoid the hole-by-hole analysis, but I do have to reinforce the fact that the coastal stretch from holes 4 to 11 justifiably receive the plaudits. The weather in that region is unpredictable but for a little extra risk you can play quite reasonably in shoulder seasons. The course rating is 71.1 and it has a slope rating of 114 on Bent grass. The second shot is where the difficulty lies and if you can safely clear the large fairway bunker then a mid/short iron running up the green is the best play. Watson went on to lose the 4-hole play-off with fellow American Stewart Cink who gladly claimed his first Major title. That said I think that the setting ( lighthouse, sea views, Ailsa Craig ) perhaps influences more positive views of the course than are warranted. The 4th to 11th hug the coast of The Firth of Clyde and the walk from the 5th green to the new shorter, but demanding, 6th hole provides a stunning view over Turnberry bay to Ailsa Craig, The Isle of Arran and Northern Ireland on a clear day.
